The past month or so has been a busy one and has started to feel normal again with the Bath Christmas market returning (sort of), and many of your online orders. I’ve tried to get a few days here and there in the studio, but the markets and online sales have had priority. Don’t worry though, I’ll have plenty of time over the coming months to crack on with it and hopefully have the Norse piece complete by February. Hel, the goddess of the dead, welcomes the dead as they enter the dark realm beneath the roots of Yggdrasil that is Helheim. One of the offspring of Loki and Angrboda, and siblings with Jörmungandr and Fenrir. One half of her body is dead, the other is alive. When Baldur dies and his soulless body is taken to Hel, Hermod rides Odin’s 8 legged noble steed Sleipnir down to Helheim and tries to persuade her to release Baldur back to the land of the living, as he was sorely missed. She replied to him by saying “If this is so, then let every thing in the cosmos weep for him, and I will send him back to you. But if any refuse, he will remain in my presence.” And, indeed, everything did weep for Baldur – everything, that is, save for one giantess: Tokk (Þökk, “Thanks”[4]), who was none other than Loki in another disguise. Tokk coldly told the messengers, “Let Hel hold what she has!” So Baldur remained in Helheim, under Hel’s rule… such is life!

“Don’t rune it!”

Before I go any further with the piece, I need to start the basic outlines of the border. So what better place to start than the central feature Norse symbol. The three layers consist of the Valknut (Knot of the slain) in the centre, also representing the 9 realms. Then the second layer is the futhark runes symbols, and the third is the Norse knot pattern (the Urnes style mostly). Colour will be added at the end as always, but this is just to give you a tease…

So I’ve finally made a start on the sea, now that the mainland of Midgard is complete. On the left side, which is represented by both night time and winter, the seas are going to be darker, showing some ice bergs and hopefully some flickering reflections of the northern lights. Notice the sea god Njord, helping a ship as he supposedly guided sailors out of troubled waters. He is the father of Freyr and Freyja, and husband to Skadi, seen on the mountains to the right. This shows their differences in marriage, that he wanted to be in the sea and she wanted to be in the mountains… such a dilemma!

Also notice Jörmungandr partially submerged in the cold icy sea. Expect to see more of his gigantic body as we travel along the waves, his scales have been relentless!

Today marks the one year anniversary that I finished my epic Greek adventure. I don’t normally celebrate anniversaries of works, but this one was by far my most ambitious and enjoyable piece to date, totalling over 1000 hours in 6 months of drawing time and a good 2 years of research. It was a long journey (odyssey if you like), but it was worth every minute. For those of you that witnessed and supported me bringing it to life I thank you once again.

I’m liking the contrast between the darker trunk and roots underneath the lighter coloured bark, slowly peeling off. Yggdrasil is coming to life, and will be the main backbone of this piece. The roots beneath Midgard feeding down into the other realms won’t feature much bark, but the branches above Asgard I’m thinking will. And I’ll be needing some serious patience to draw in all the leaves…. Time to make like a tree?

“Roots bloody Roots!”
🌳 🍃🌳
The world tree Yggdrasil is starting to make an appearance now with the roots seeping put into the world. Also notice Ask and Embla, the first humans created by the gods from two trees found together on a beach. Ask was created from an Ash tree (coincidentally the same tree as Yggdrasil), and Embla from an Elm tree. Still some work to do on the roots, some more definition on the lighting and even some fog and mist effects hopefully. Also, one other little thing you’ll see is a fallen leaf… an idea I’ve just thought of and will feature many of them throughout the piece!
